He was a dedicated community member, serving as a volunteer fireman and assistant fire chief, as well as an EMT and paramedic. The circumstances surrounding Richard's death were particularly
harrowing. On the morning of his death, Richard was brutally executed by Terry Miller, a 69-year-old man from Hammondsville, OH. Terry, who was reportedly still angered over a breakup with a woman several years prior, forced Richard's girlfriend to watch as he shot Richard six times, with several bullets fired point-blank into his head. After committing the murder, Terry turned the gun on himself.
The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department was alerted to the situation when Terry's stepson called to report that Terry had threatened to kill someone. Despite the tragic outcome, the quick response of law enforcement prevented further bloodshed. Terry had a history of legal troubles, including a previous arrest and sentencing for drug trafficking in the mid-1980s.
