Born on June 27, 1997, Jayla was known for her love of the outdoors, including activities like hunting, fishing, and going mudding. She was a proud mother to two young sons and deeply cared for her family and friends.
The investigation into Jayla's death revealed that she was murdered by Tristaney Baker, a 20-year-old woman from Zanesville. Baker, who was upset with Jayla for reasons that were not clearly apparent, planned the murder and carried it out by shooting Jayla multiple times in her apartment on Sixth Street in downtown Zanesville. Baker used a gun that she obtained from her co-defendant, Devin McKnelly, who helped her escape to Columbus shortly after the crime. However, both Baker and McKnelly were arrested within 24 hours of the shooting.
During the trial, it was revealed that Baker had stalked Jayla for hours before executing her plan. She shot Jayla in the hip and continued firing until she was on the ground, then shot her in the face.
