Douglas Doug Robinson, a 61-year-old man from Cincinnati, OH, tragically lost his life on May 4, 2021. Robinson was an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire of a shootout that took place in the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood. The incident occurred shortly after midnight when multiple groups engaged in a gun battle, resulting in approximately 40 shots being fired.
Robinson was likely crossing Walnut Street when he was struck by gunfire and collapsed near the corner of Walnut and 13th streets.
The investigation into Robinson's death led to the arrest and conviction of several individuals. Donta Cody, a 32-year-old man, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and a gun charge, receiving a sentence of eight to 10½ years in prison. Two teenagers, Demarion Beauchamp and Dimareon McCray, were also charged as adults and pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter, each receiving sentences of 9 to 12 years in prison. Beauchamp was 16 years old at the time of the incident, and McCray was 17.
The court documents revealed that the shootout began following an argument earlier that night between Beauchamp and an unnamed adult. Beauchamp, along with McCray and another juvenile, planned an ambush on the group they believed was responsible for the earlier altercation. Cody, who was dating Beauchamp's aunt, joined the teens and participated in the shootout. Although Cody admitted his involvement, he claimed he did not fire the shots that killed Robinson.
Robinson, described as a very gentle man, struggled with chronic homelessness but had recently found housing. He was well-known in the Over-the-Rhine community and often asked for help on the streets. His death was a tragic outcome of a violent confrontation that he had no part in.
The case highlighted the ongoing issues of gun violence and gang activity in Cincinnati, with authorities emphasizing that the incident did not involve gangs. The community mourned the loss of Robinson, a man who was known for his kindness and resilience despite his difficult circumstances.
