Leon Billy Daniels, a 38-year-old male of African American ethnicity, tragically lost his life on May 24, 2021, in West Jefferson, Ohio. He was one of four victims found shot to death at an apartment on Jackson Street. The incident occurred when a passerby called 911 around 5:30 p.m., reporting a man lying outside the apartment with a possible gunshot wound. Upon arrival, officers discovered three additional victims inside the apartment, all pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation into the quadruple murder revealed that the victims included Andrew Thomas Swindall, 45, of West Jefferson; Shawn A. Wright, 45, of London; Jamie Danielle Lavender, 30, of Springfield; and Leon Billy Daniels. The suspect, John Paul Steckel, 35, was identified and charged with four counts of aggravated murder. Steckel was found guilty on all charges and received four life sentences without parole, with an additional 12 years added for firearm specifications.

The case drew significant attention due to the brutality of the murders and the fact that Steckel and the victims knew each other, with robbery being a possible motive. The investigation involved collaboration between the West Jefferson Police Department, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation. Steckel's criminal background and probation status added complexity to the case, ultimately leading to his conviction and sentencing.

The tragic loss of Leon Billy Daniels and the other victims left a profound impact on the community, prompting a thorough investigation and legal proceedings to bring justice to the families affected by this senseless act of violence.
