Andrew Thomas Swindall, a 45-year-old man from West Jefferson, Ohio, tragically lost his life on May 24, 2021. Swindall was one of four victims found in a shooting incident at an apartment on Jackson Street in West Jefferson. The other victims included Shawn A. Wright, 45, Jamie Danielle Lavender, 30, and Leon Billy Daniels, 38. Swindall was discovered outside the apartment, while the other three victims were found inside.
The investigation into the shooting revealed that the incident occurred between 1 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on the day of the incident. A passerby called 911 around 5:30 p.m., reporting a man with a possible gunshot wound near the apartment. When officers arrived, they found Swindall and the other victims deceased. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Madison County Sheriff's Office assisted in the investigation.
In February 2024, John Steckel was found guilty on four counts of aggravated murder in connection with the shooting deaths. Steckel received four life sentences without parole, one for each victim, with an additional 12 years added for firearm specifications. The brutality of the murders led to Madison County Prosecutor Nick Adkins requesting the maximum sentences.
The tragic loss of Andrew Thomas Swindall and the other victims left the community in shock, as such violent incidents were rare in West Jefferson. The investigation and subsequent trial brought some measure of justice, but the pain and grief experienced by the victims' families and friends remain profound.
