On May 24, 2021, Jamie Danielle Lavender, a 30-year-old woman from Springfield, Ohio, was tragically shot and killed in West Jefferson, Ohio. She was one of four victims found at an apartment on Jackson Street. The other victims included Andrew Thomas Swindall, 45, of West Jefferson; Shawn A. Wright, 45, of London, Ohio; and Leon Billy Daniels, 38, also of London, Ohio. The incident was reported to authorities after a passerby called 911 around 5:30 p.m.
The investigation revealed that the shooting was likely a targeted event, as the victims were found both inside and outside the apartment. West Jefferson Police Chief Chris Floyd stated that there was no immediate suspect information at the time, and the case was treated as an ongoing investigation with assistance from the Madison County Sheriff’s Office and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the community mourned the loss of Lavender, who was described by her family as a bright, beautiful soul who loved her five children and six siblings deeply. Her sisters, Shanda Moyer and Ashley Howard, expressed their grief and desire for justice, emphasizing Jamie's positive impact on those around her.
The investigation eventually led to the arrest of John Paul Steckel, who was indicted on multiple counts of murder and aggravated murder. Steckel was found guilty on four counts of aggravated murder and received multiple life sentences without parole. The court added an additional 12 years to his sentences for firearm specifications. Steckel's trial revealed that he and the victims knew each other, and robbery was considered a possible motive for the shootings.
The tragic loss of Jamie Danielle Lavender and the other victims left a lasting impact on their families and the community, who continue to seek justice and closure for the senseless act of violence.
