James Henry Holland III was a 52-year-old man and a truck driver. His life was cut short in a shooting in Garfield Heights, Ohio, in the summer of 2021.
On the night of Friday, July 23, 2021, at approximately 10:53 p.m., Garfield Heights police officers were dispatched to a parking lot at 5020 Turney Road after receiving a report of shots fired and a man down. Upon arrival, they found Holland with a gunshot wound to his head.
Paramedics transported him to Marymount Hospital, and from there he was life-flighted to MetroHealth Hospital in Cleveland for more advanced care. Despite medical efforts, Holland was pronounced dead at 6:45 p.m. the following evening, on July 24, 2021.
The shooter had fled the scene before police arrived. Investigators quickly identified a suspect: Holland's 24-year-old nephew, Nyles Alexander Flowers of Chagrin Falls. Garfield Heights Police issued a statewide alert for Flowers and his vehicle, a 2005 Honda Accord.
The alert led to a search that concluded in the early hours of July 24. At around 2:42 a.m., the Ohio State Highway Patrol was notified to be on the lookout for the vehicle. Just nine minutes later, a trooper spotted the Honda traveling south on Interstate 77. The trooper followed the car until backup arrived, and a felony traffic stop was conducted near Caldwell in Noble County. Flowers was removed from the car at gunpoint and taken into custody without incident. A search of the vehicle did not turn up a weapon.
Flowers was transported to the Garfield Heights City Jail, and a warrant was issued for his arrest on an initial charge of felonious assault. As of July 2021, he remained in custody with additional charges pending as the case entered the legal system.
