London Anthony Ira Kidd was a 14-year-old boy whose life was tragically cut short in his community of East Cleveland, Ohio. He was a Black male whose loss inspired his mother to create a movement in his memory, dedicated to giving a voice to young victims of violence.
The events that took London’s life began on October 11, 2021, when he was shot in East Cleveland. He was rushed to a hospital in critical condition.
Despite medical efforts, London passed away from his injuries the next day, on October 12, 2021.
In the wake of her son’s death, London’s mother, Garnett McGaughy, channeled her grief into action to prevent other families from experiencing her pain. She started a movement called V.O.C.A.L., an acronym for Voice Our Children All Lives, to raise awareness about what she described as the devastating trend of children killing children.
In November 2021, McGaughy organized a rally to honor London and other children lost to gun violence. Dozens of community members joined her, walking from East 129th Street to East Cleveland City Hall. They carried signs and photos of their loved ones, turning their private sorrow into a public call for an end to the violence.
As of November 2021, the investigation into London Kidd's murder was ongoing, but no arrests had been made. His case remains unsolved.
