On January 27, 2022, Yazmink Speer, a 17-year-old girl from Columbus, Ohio, tragically lost her life after being shot in the southeast side of the city. She was found suffering from a gunshot wound and was rushed to Mount Carmel East Hospital in critical condition, but unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries early the next morning.
Columbus police arrested DeVaughn Morgan, a 24-year-old man, and charged him with murder in connection with Speer's death. According to court documents, detectives discovered that Morgan was the father of Speer's 3-month-old baby. During the investigation, Morgan changed his story multiple times but eventually admitted to placing a handgun inside the apartment and then selling it to an unknown individual the next day.
The motive behind the shooting has not been disclosed by the police. Morgan was scheduled to appear in court and was being held in the Franklin County Correctional Center II. Speer's death marked the eighth homicide in Columbus for the year 2022.
