Rodney Allen Queen was a 57-year-old man from West Portsmouth, Ohio, who was remembered as an avid hunter, fisherman, reader, and poet. A graduate of Shawnee State University, where he earned numerous degrees and often made the Dean's List, he was an enthusiastic world traveler who loved the outdoors and country life. He was survived by his daughter, Brandy Markova, and several siblings.
On the night of February 27, 2022, the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting
that someone had been shot in West Portsmouth. When deputies arrived at the scene, they found Rodney with a gunshot wound. He was immediately transported to St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington, West Virginia, for treatment. Despite medical efforts, Rodney Queen died from his injuries two days later, on March 1, 2022.
The investigation quickly led to a suspect, Terry A. Jewell, a 53-year-old man also from West Portsmouth. Jewell was arrested and initially charged with felonious assault and having a weapon under disability. He was held in the Scioto County jail on a $100,000 bond.
As the case progressed, a Scioto County grand jury indicted Jewell on more serious charges: two counts of murder, two counts of felonious assault, and two counts of having weapons under disability. The indictment noted that Jewell had previous drug-related charges. Following the indictment, the case against Jewell proceeded to trial. In August 2022, a jury found him guilty of the murder of Rodney Queen.
