Devonte Johnson, a 16-year-old African American male from Cleveland, OH, tragically lost his life on August 17, 2022. He was fatally shot near Glenville High School in the 600 block of East 113th Street. The incident occurred just after 4 p.m., and despite efforts by police and EMS to save him, Devonte was pronounced dead at the scene. The Cleveland Division of Police is investigating his death as a homicide.
The community responded with a vigil held near the site of the shooting, where
loved ones and community members gathered to remember Devonte. His aunt spoke at the vigil, describing him as respectful and a talented football player. Glenville High School football coach Ted Ginn Sr. mentioned that Devonte had been part of the football team and that efforts were being made to bring him back this year.
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with Devonte's death. Cleveland Ward 9 councilman Kevin Conwell has been actively involved in the community, knocking on doors in hopes of gathering information that could lead to an arrest. The police have urged anyone with information to come forward and have offered a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest.
The investigation remains ongoing, and the Cleveland Division of Police continues to seek justice for Devonte Johnson. The community remains hopeful that the responsible parties will be brought to justice and that such tragedies can be prevented in the future.
