On October 15, 2022, Bernadette A. Steadman, a 92-year-old woman from Elyria, Ohio, tragically lost her life in an incident that was later determined to be a murder-suicide. Bernadette, along with three other family members, was found dead inside their trailer home in the West Ridge Green Mobile Park. The other victims included her son, Matthew J. Steadman, 34, her daughter, Lisa B. Steadman, 60, and her husband, James C. Steadman, 69. All four individuals died from gunshot wounds.

Authorities believe that James Steadman was the gunman responsible for the deaths. The incident came to light after James Steadman called 911 around 11:45 p.m., claiming he had killed his family and was planning to take his own life. When police arrived at the scene, they found the residence locked and had to force their way inside, where they discovered the bodies of the Steadman family.

Neighbors described the family as kind and well-liked in the community. James Steadman, who was the primary caregiver for his wife and mother, both of whom were in poor health, had reportedly expressed feelings of exhaustion and stress due to the responsibilities of caring for his family. Just days before the incident, a charitable organization had installed a wooden ramp to assist James in moving Bernadette, who was wheelchair-bound, and his wife in and out of the home.

The Elyria Police Department and the Lorain County Coroner's Office continue to investigate the incident. Detective Kasperovich is the lead investigator, and anyone with information about the case is encouraged to contact him. The community has been left in shock by the tragic event, and resources for mental health support are available for those affected.

This heartbreaking incident serves as a reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and the need for support systems for caregivers who may be struggling under the weight of their responsibilities.
