On December 25, 1929, Carrie Lawson, a 12-year-old girl from Germanton, North Carolina, tragically lost her life in a horrific familicide. Carrie was one of the seven children of Charles Davis Lawson and his wife, Fannie Manring Lawson. The Lawson family was well-known in their community, and their sudden and brutal deaths shocked the entire nation.
The day before the murders, Charles Lawson took his entire family, including Carrie, into town for a rare shopping trip and to have a family portrait taken. This unusual activity raised suspicions later, as it was not typical for a working-class rural family of that era. On Christmas Day, Charles Lawson first shot his daughters, Carrie and Maybell, as they were on their way to visit their uncle and aunt. He waited for them by the family's tobacco barn and shot them with a 12-gauge shotgun before ensuring they were dead by bludgeoning them. The bodies were then placed in the tobacco barn.
After killing his daughters, Charles Lawson returned to the house and shot his wife, Fannie, who was on the porch. Marie, the eldest daughter, screamed upon hearing the gunshot, while the two younger boys, James and Raymond, tried to find a hiding place. Lawson shot Marie and then found and killed the two boys. Lastly, he killed the baby, Mary Lou, who was thought to have been bludgeoned to death. After committing these heinous acts, Charles Lawson went into the nearby woods and shot himself several hours later.
The only survivor of the massacre was the eldest son, Arthur Lawson, who was sent on an errand by his father just before the murders began. The bodies of the Lawson family members were found with their arms crossed and rocks under their heads, a grim and haunting image that remains etched in the history of Germanton.
The tragic events of that Christmas Day left the community in shock and sorrow, and the Lawson family murders became one of the most horrifying acts of familial violence in American history. The motive behind Charles Lawson's actions remains a subject of speculation, with theories ranging from financial difficulties to personal grievances. However, no arrests, suspects, litigations, or investigations were conducted, as the perpetrator was deceased.
