Kenneth Godfrey, a 29-year-old male, tragically lost his life on January 17, 1987, in Shelby, North Carolina. He was one of three men killed in a mass shooting at the Shelby III Bookstore, an adult bookstore known to attract a gay clientele. The incident also left two other men seriously injured.

Law enforcement initially explored several possible motives, including a mafia hit, a business dispute, or a crime of passion involving a jilted ex-lover. However, the focus eventually shifted to Frazier Glenn Miller Jr., a leader of the North Carolina-based White Patriot Party . Miller implicated two of his followers, Douglas Lawrence Sheets and Robert Eugene Jackson, in the murders.
In November 1987, Sheets and Jackson were indicted for the murders. Sheets went to trial in 1989, but he was acquitted, and the charges against Jackson were subsequently dropped. Despite the efforts of law enforcement and the testimonies provided, the case remains officially unsolved to this day.
