Patrol Officer Eugene A. Griffin, age 42, of the Charlotte Police Department, North Carolina, tragically lost his life on November 22, 1991. Officer Griffin was working an overtime assignment as security at the Red Roof Inn when he encountered three 17-year-old youths who were causing a disturbance. He asked them to leave the premises, and they initially complied. However, they returned shortly after, and as Officer Griffin stood to confront them, one of the youths shot him with a shotgun.
