On April 29, 2024, a tragic incident unfolded in Charlotte, North Carolina, resulting in the deaths of four law enforcement officers, including Task Force Officer Samuel Poloche, aged 42. The officers were part of a U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force attempting to serve active felony warrants on 39-year-old Terry Clark Hughes Jr. at a residence on Galway Drive in the North Tryon Division. As the officers approached, Hughes opened fire with an AR-15 rifle, striking multiple officers.
In total, eight officers were shot during the confrontation.
Officer Poloche, along with Officer William "Alden" Elliott, both 14-year veterans of the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction, were fatally wounded during the exchange. Deputy U.S. Marshal Thomas Weeks Jr. and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) Officer Joshua Eyer also lost their lives in the line of duty. Four additional officers sustained injuries but survived.
The suspect, Terry Hughes, had a criminal history, including previous convictions and outstanding warrants for possession of a firearm by a felon and felony flee to elude in Lincoln County, North Carolina. After the initial gunfire, Hughes exited the residence armed, prompting law enforcement to perceive an imminent deadly threat. Officers returned fire, fatally striking Hughes in the front yard of the residence. Two females inside the home were detained for questioning but were later released without charges, as they were found not to have been involved in the shooting.
Subsequent investigations by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department confirmed that Hughes acted alone during the incident. Ballistic evidence indicated that all shots fired at the officers originated from Hughes' AR-15 rifle, with no evidence of friendly fire contributing to the officers' injuries or deaths. The investigation was extensive, involving the examination of body-worn camera footage, thousands of images, numerous officer interviews, and the collection of physical evidence.
The loss of Officer Poloche and his fellow officers had a profound impact on the Charlotte community and law enforcement agencies nationwide. Vigils and memorial services were held to honor their service and sacrifice. Officer Poloche is remembered for his dedication to duty and his commitment to protecting the community he served.
