His death was part of a larger, disturbing incident involving his son, Alvaro Rafael Castillo. Alvaro, who was also 19 years old at the time, confessed to killing his father and subsequently opened fire at Orange High School, where he had been a student.
Alvaro Castillo was arrested shortly after the shooting incident at the school, where he had driven into the parking lot and fired multiple rounds at the building. Two students were injured in the attack, one by a bullet graze and another by shattered glass. Authorities discovered ammunition, weapons, and homemade pipe bombs in the van Alvaro used to drive to the school.
Upon investigation, deputies forced their way into the Castillo family home and found Rafael Huezo Castillo's body, who had been shot multiple times. Alvaro Castillo was charged with first-degree murder in connection with his father's death and faced additional charges related to the school shooting, including attempted murder and possession of weapons of mass destruction.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Alvaro Castillo had been obsessed with the Columbine High School massacre and had sent an email to the principal of Columbine High School warning of his impending attack. He was found guilty on all charges and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The court also recommended that he receive mental health treatment while incarcerated.
