Jyquel McRae, a 19-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on April 1, 2021, in Hillsborough, North Carolina. The incident occurred outside the Hillsborough Discount Tobacco & Vape shop at the Hampton Pointe shopping center. According to reports, McRae was involved in an altercation with Doyle Edwards, a 25-year-old man, and Chase Torain, another individual present at the scene.
The confrontation escalated when McRae, who had previously been threatened by Torain, pulled out a gun during the fight but later returned it to his car upon realizing the other men were unarmed.
The situation took a deadly turn when Edwards retrieved the gun from McRae's car and shot him. The entire incident was captured on surveillance video, which was later shown to the jury during the trial. Edwards briefly entered the store before returning to record a cell phone video of McRae as he lay dying on the ground. Edwards taunted McRae in the video, which he subsequently posted on the Snapchat social media app. McRae was later pronounced dead at Duke University Hospital.
In the legal proceedings that followed, Doyle Edwards was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter, simple assault, breaking or entering into a motor vehicle, and larceny of a firearm. He was sentenced to 80 to 108 months in prison, along with 30 months of supervised probation. Edwards' attorney argued that the shooting was an act of self-defense, as McRae had threatened both Edwards and Torain with the gun during the altercation. However, the jury ultimately convicted Edwards of the charges brought against him.
Chase Torain, who was also involved in the fight, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault. The case highlighted the tragic consequences of violence and the complex legal battles that ensued in the aftermath of Jyquel McRae's death.
