In a heroic act that ultimately cost him his life, 61-year-old Calvin Robinson was fatally wounded in downtown Detroit. The incident began in August 2013 when Robinson, a male, witnessed two young women being mugged on Jefferson Avenue near the Renaissance Center. Without hesitation, he got out of his vehicle to assist the women and began to pursue the individuals responsible.
His courageous intervention took a tragic turn a few blocks away at the corner of St.
Antoine and Atwater streets, where he was shot in the head. At the time of the shooting, the Rib and Soul Festival was taking place in nearby Hart Plaza, and it is believed that many people may have witnessed the initial robbery and the subsequent shooting. Following the assault, Robinson was hospitalized and spent six months on life support as his family held out hope for his recovery.
Despite their hopes, his condition did not improve, and doctors eventually informed the family that there was nothing more they could do. In January 2014, his family made the difficult decision to remove him from life support. To date, no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Calvin Robinson. Law enforcement officials have sought the public's assistance in solving the case and released descriptions of a group of eight black males and one black female who were recorded on surveillance footage near the scene of the crime. The investigation into his death remains ongoing.
