Jason Rcom-Nie, a 5-year-old boy from Greensboro, NC, tragically lost his life on July 21, 2011. The incident occurred when his father, Hoanh Rcom, entered the apartment of his estranged wife, H'li Nie, with an assault rifle and opened fire. The shooting resulted in the deaths of Jason, his mother's boyfriend Joshua Samuel Prago, and a family friend, Hdingh Nie.
Jason, who was of Asian descent, was taken to Moses Cone Hospital but succumbed to his injuries before arrival.
Hoanh Rcom, 34, was arrested and charged with three counts of first-degree murder and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. The police apprehended him after he attempted to flee the scene in a vehicle, which led to a confrontation with an officer. Hoanh was taken into custody and held in the Guilford County Jail without bond. Prior to this incident, Hoanh had a history of misdemeanor charges related to boating safety violations.
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, but it was reported that Hoanh was suicidal and had attempted to take his own life a few days before the incident. His brother, Paul Rcom, mentioned that Hoanh believed his estranged wife was seeing another man, which may have contributed to his actions. The tragic event left the community in shock and mourning, as they came together to remember the lives lost in this senseless act of violence.
