On November 20, 2011, Mary Ann Holder, Zack's mother, went on a shooting rampage that resulted in the deaths of
several family members, including Zack. Holder, 36, had been involved in a tumultuous relationship with Randy Lamb, which had ended two years prior. The relationship had been marked by restraining orders and legal disputes, including a civil lawsuit for "alienation of affection" filed by Lamb's wife, Jennifer Swann Lamb. The day before the shootings, the Lambs had reached a settlement in the lawsuit.
On the morning of the incident, Holder arranged to meet Randy Lamb at the GTCC's Aviation Center, where she shot him twice, wounding him. She then proceeded to her home, where she shot and killed her sons, 17-year-old Dylan Smith and 14-year-old Zachary Smith, as well as her 8-year-old niece, Hanaleigh Michelle Suttles. Holder also shot her nephew, 17-year-old Richard Brian "Ricky" Suttles, and Makayla Kee Woods, 17, who was Dylan's girlfriend. Both Ricky and Makayla were critically injured but survived the attack.
Holder left two notes at her home, the contents of which were not revealed by the authorities. The police timeline indicates that after shooting Lamb, Holder drove to the Couch home to pick up Zack, who had spent the night there. By 10:11 a.m., police spotted Holder's black Ford Explorer on Remora Drive and saw a puff of brown smoke, indicating that she had turned the gun on herself, ending her life.
The investigation into the incident revealed that Holder had been struggling with the aftermath of her relationship with Lamb and the legal battles that ensued. The tragic event left the community in shock and mourning, as they grappled with the loss of young lives and the senseless violence that had unfolded.
