Ahmed Shahit, a 55-year-old male of Yemeni descent, was tragically shot and killed on March 31, 2014, in Henderson, North Carolina. Shahit was working as a store clerk at the Best Bet Food Mart on Raleigh Road when two men entered the store at approximately 10:30 p.m. and demanded money. During the robbery, Shahit was shot and pronounced dead at the scene. Shahit had moved to the United States in search of a better life, leaving behind his wife and children in Yemen.
He had been working at the store for three years and lived in a nearby duplex, walking to work each day.
The investigation into Shahit's murder led to the arrest of three suspects. Dontrell Jaquan Hargrove, a 22-year-old male from Henderson, was charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon and accessory after the fact to first-degree murder. Marvin Hargrove Jr., a 25-year-old male from Henderson, was charged with first-degree murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and second-degree kidnapping. Daiquan Jameek Waddell, an 18-year-old male from Henderson, was also arrested and charged with first-degree murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and second-degree kidnapping. Waddell faced additional charges related to three other robberies in the area.
The arrests of the suspects brought some relief to the community, but the loss of Shahit was deeply felt by those who knew him. Friends and customers remembered him as a kind and hardworking individual who had come to the United States with hopes of providing a better future for his family. The investigation into Shahit's murder was a collaborative effort between the Henderson Police Department and the State Bureau of Investigation, with authorities urging anyone with information to come forward.
