Wendy Jean Johnson, a 58-year-old white female, was tragically shot and killed on August 22, 2014, in the parking lot of Hyde Park Apartments in Cary, North Carolina. Wendy, a night nurse from Sanford, was getting out of her car when she was approached by Daniel Scott Remington, who attempted to rob her. When Wendy resisted and refused to give up her purse, Remington shot her. Wendy was taken to Duke University Hospital in Durham, where she was pronounced dead.
Daniel Scott Remington, 38, of Gooseneck Drive, was arrested and charged with Wendy's murder. His girlfriend, Jessica Renee Parrisher, 28, was charged with accessory after the fact to first-degree murder. Remington pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. His plea allowed him to avoid the death penalty.
Wendy Jean Johnson was remembered as a selfless and tenacious individual who dedicated her life to helping others. She moved to North Carolina to help raise her granddaughter while her husband was deployed in Afghanistan. Wendy worked as a night nurse, providing in-home care to patients, and went on multiple mission trips to care for children overseas. Her daughter, Lora Jackson, described her as a Christian, a missionary, and a loving mother, grandmother, and mentor.
The tragic incident raised concerns among residents of the Hyde Park Apartments about their safety. The apartment complex management took steps to improve security, including re-evaluating lighting and hiring an off-duty police officer to patrol after-hours.
