Nathan Andrew Clark, a 13-year-old boy from Lewisville, North Carolina, tragically lost his life on November 14, 2014, while staying at a Comfort Suites hotel in Raleigh. Nathan, who was in Raleigh for a soccer tournament, was asleep in his hotel room when a bullet fired from an adjacent room penetrated the wall and struck him in the head. The incident occurred at the Comfort Suites near the Beltline in east Raleigh.
The shooter, Randall Louis Vater of Knightdale, North Carolina, was in
the adjacent room when his gun discharged, sending the fatal bullet through the wall. Vater, who had a long criminal history including 28 convictions over several decades, was charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with Nathan's death. He pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to 11 to 15 years in prison.
Nathan was an eighth-grader at Calvary Baptist Day School in Winston-Salem and played varsity soccer for the school. His family was devastated by the loss, and his mother, Valerie Clark, spoke in court about the profound impact Nathan's death had on her life. She described herself as a "broken, lonely, anxious, confused woman" who struggled with anxiety and grief every day since the incident.
The case highlighted the dangers of gun violence and the tragic consequences it can have on innocent lives. Vater's criminal record included charges such as hit-and-run, communicating threats, assault on a female, breaking and entering, and multiple protective orders. Despite his lengthy criminal history, he was released from Wake County jail less than a month before the shooting after serving seven months for violating a domestic violence protective order.
