Khammone Soulasinh, a 22-year-old male of Hmong ethnicity, tragically lost his life on November 18, 2014, in a home invasion in Mount Gilead, North Carolina. The incident occurred around 3:20 a.m. on Highway 109, a few miles north of Mount Gilead. According to reports, Khammone Soulasinh was found shot on the porch and died en route to the hospital.
The home invasion also resulted in another victim, Vilakhone Soulasinh, being shot and flown to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
The suspect in this case, Kamphone Douangkham, was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in the woods behind the home. Authorities believe that Douangkham forced his way into the home, shot both victims, and then fled the scene. The incident was domestic-related, as Khammone Soulasinh and Vilakhone Soulasinh had two children together, although the children were not home at the time of the incident. The third victim, who fled the home uninjured, is a relative of Khammone and Vilakhone Soulasinh.
The investigation revealed that the victims were part of the Hmong community. The search for the suspect involved a state Highway Patrol helicopter, and West Montgomery middle and high schools were put on a two-hour delay during the search. The tragic event left the community in shock and mourning, as they grappled with the loss of Khammone Soulasinh and the injuries sustained by Vilakhone Soulasinh.
