Michael Anthony Beltran, a 25-year-old male from Conover, NC, was tragically killed on September 9, 2015. The incident occurred during a domestic situation at a home on Third Street Place SW in Conover. Police responded to the scene around 9 p.m. and found two victims with gunshot wounds. Michael Anthony Beltran was pronounced dead at the scene, while Lisa Vanhoogen was transported to Catawba Valley Medical Center and was reported to be in stable condition.
The suspect, Daniel Williamson, was arrested and charged with murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, and inflicting serious injury. The police confirmed that the victims and the suspect knew each other, and this incident was not a random act of violence.
Daniel Williamson, 31 years old at the time of his plea, later pleaded guilty to second-degree murder as part of an agreement with the N.C. Department of Justice and the District Attorney’s Office. This plea allowed him to avoid a first-degree murder conviction for the killing of Michael Beltran. Williamson also pleaded guilty to felony assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury for the shooting of Lisa Vanhoogen. Additionally, he faced misdemeanor charges of larceny and assault on a female from a separate incident in March 2020. Superior Court Judge William Wood accepted Williamson’s plea and sentenced him to between 13 and 18 years in prison. Williamson had already served more than three years in jail awaiting trial.
The case highlights the tragic consequences of domestic violence and the legal proceedings that followed. Michael Anthony Beltran's death left a lasting impact on the community, and the legal resolution brought some measure of justice for the victims and their families.
