Stephenie Ann Mazzella, a 43-year-old woman from Wake Forest, NC, tragically lost her life on March 25, 2016. Stephenie, along with her husband Sandy Mazzella, 47, and Sandy's mother Elaine Mazzella, 76, were brutally murdered in their home. The perpetrator of this heinous crime was their neighbor, Jonathan Sander, who had a long-standing feud with the Mazzella family.
The conflict between the two families had escalated over time, leading to this tragic outcome.
The Mazzella family had moved to Wake Forest around 2007 and lived next door to Jonathan Sander and his family. Sandy Mazzella was the president of Advanced Mowing and Landscaping Inc., and he had partnered with Jonathan in the business. Stephenie worked as an ICU nurse at a local hospital. The families were initially close, spending holidays and vacations together. However, their relationship began to deteriorate in late 2015 due to business-related issues and financial troubles. The Mazzellas suspected Jonathan of embezzling, which led to constant conflicts between them.
In February 2016, Sandy and his father Salvatore were granted restraining orders against Jonathan after he had threatened them and their family. Tensions heightened in March 2016 when a minor from the Mazzella family accused Jonathan of inappropriate behavior. The Mazzellas taunted Sander regarding the accusation, further escalating the conflict. Just a day before the shooting, Salvatore and Sandy had appeared before a judge to extend the restraining order, but the petition was rejected.
On the day of the murders, Jonathan Sander, in a fit of rage, grabbed a loaded shotgun and burst into the Mazzella home, shooting Sandy, Stephenie, and Elaine multiple times at close range. Sandy's father, Salvatore, managed to escape and flag down a neighbor to call the authorities. Fortunately, Sandy and Stephenie's son was out with friends at the time, and their daughter was hiding upstairs, unharmed. Jonathan Sander was arrested and later convicted of the murders. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. During the trial, Sander claimed he was framed and accused Salvatore Mazzella of killing his family for insurance money. Despite his disruptive behavior in court, the judge handed down the life sentence, ensuring that Sander would spend the rest of his life behind bars.
