The incident occurred in the afternoon on North Tryon Street, just outside uptown Charlotte. Officers from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department were called to the scene around 3:30 p.m., where they found Brittany Carelock lying on the ground with a gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation revealed that Brittany Carelock knew her killer, and the shooting was not a random act of violence.
