Roderick Nathaniel Davis, a 35-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on February 11, 2017, in Selma, North Carolina. The incident occurred around 2:00 AM in the parking lot of the Rumba Club on US 301 South, near the Smithfield city limits. Davis approached a vehicle occupied by four individuals and opened fire on the driver, striking him twice. In response, one of the passengers in the vehicle returned fire, fatally wounding Davis. When the police arrived at the scene, they found Davis lying on the ground next to the vehicle. He was rushed to Johnston Medical Center in Smithfield, where he succumbed to his gunshot wounds.
The driver, who was also shot twice, was taken to Wake Medical Center and was reported to be in stable condition. The names of the individuals involved were not released. According to Selma Police Captain R.L. Daniels, the shooting stemmed from an earlier incident in Harnett County. Although some of the parties involved were gang members, detectives could not prove that the shooting was gang-related.
After reviewing the case with the District Attorney's Office, officials announced that no charges would be filed in connection with the fatal shooting. The decision was based on the circumstances surrounding the incident and the inability to establish a clear gang-related motive.
Roderick Nathaniel Davis, who resided in Erwin, North Carolina, is survived by his daughter, Caniah Reshae Daye Davis, his grandmother, Myrtle Davis, and his brothers and sisters. The tragic events of that night left a lasting impact on his family and the community, as they mourned the loss of a father, grandson, and sibling.
