Edward Phipps, a 49-year-old male of unspecified ethnicity, tragically lost his life on September 28, 2017, in Woodland, North Carolina. Phipps was fatally shot during a home invasion at his residence in the Arrowhead Mobile Home Park. The incident occurred just before midnight when deputies from the Northampton County Sheriff's Office responded to a call about shots being fired.

On September 25, 2017, authorities arrested 22-year-old Raquan Omar Williams, who was charged with first-degree murder, among other serious offenses. Subsequently, on October 2, 2017, four additional suspects were arrested in connection with the crime. These suspects included Shirley Williams, Deshawn Lamont Beverly, Deshy Obraint Gatling, and Eric Vaughan Jr. All were charged with first-degree murder and other related charges.
The case saw multiple arrests and ongoing legal proceedings over the years. Eric Vaughan Jr. was convicted of first-degree murder and received a life sentence without the possibility of parole. Deshy Gatling pled guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 20 to 25 years in prison. Deshawn Lamont Beverly also pled guilty to second-degree murder and received a similar sentence. Raquan Williams, initially charged with first-degree murder, eventually pled guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 15 to 19 years in prison. Shirley Williams' court proceedings were still pending at the time.
