Carlton Butler, a 22-year-old African American male, was found dead in his barracks at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, on November 25, 2017. Butler was an infantryman assigned to B Company, 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division. He joined the Army in June 2014 and was stationed at Fort Bragg in December of the same year. The circumstances surrounding his death were initially unclear, prompting an investigation by Army officials.
