Melanie Anita Clark, a 62-year-old African American woman from Salisbury, NC, was tragically murdered on March 26, 2018. Melanie was a beloved member of her community, known for her kindness and dedication to her church, Progressive Outreach Ministry. She had worked at Freightliner for over 20 years and was looking forward to her retirement. Melanie was also a devoted grandmother, raising her grandson Joshua Dimitri Clark, despite the challenges she faced with him.
On the day of her
death, Melanie was found in her home with a gunshot wound to the head. Her death was initially reported as a cardiac arrest, but further investigation revealed the true cause. Joshua Dimitri Clark, her 25-year-old grandson, confessed to the murder. He admitted to shooting Melanie with a rented 9mm handgun, which he had obtained from a friend. After the murder, Joshua stole Melanie's purse and used her bank card to withdraw money from several ATMs.
Joshua was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon. He remains in the Rowan County jail without bond. The investigation also led to the arrest of two other individuals, Creaig Wilson Helms Jr. and Cory Wayne Harrington, who were charged with felony identity theft for using Melanie's bank card.
Melanie's death has left a deep void in the lives of those who knew her. Friends and family remember her as a compassionate and caring woman who always had a smile on her face. Her presence is greatly missed by her church community, her coworkers at Freightliner, and her family.
