Floyd Anthony "Andy" Evans, a 65-year-old white male, passed away on June 16, 2018, in Fremont, North Carolina. Evans was found dead in a garage at one of his properties on Evans Farm Road. The Wayne County Sheriff's Office discovered his body, and it was determined that he died from an apparent gunshot wound. Evans was a well-known figure in the community, having served as the former mayor of Fremont and holding various leadership positions throughout his life.
The investigation into
Evans' death revealed that he was shot once in the head while on the phone with a coworker. Authorities found him sitting in a recliner in an unlocked detached garage on his property. No weapon was found at the scene, and his wallet was missing. The Wayne County Sheriff's Office immediately began investigating the homicide, and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation assisted in the case.
During the investigation, authorities developed information regarding the suspected embezzlement of funds associated with Evans' farming operation. This led to a separate investigation into the embezzlement. On November 2, 2021, Elizabeth Raper Fleming, a 53-year-old former office manager of Evans' farming operation, was arrested and charged with five felony counts of embezzlement, one count of obtaining property by false pretenses, and one count of felony embezzlement over $100,000. Fleming was issued a $175,000 secured bond and booked at the Wayne County Detention Center.
Despite the embezzlement charges, no arrests have been made in connection with Evans' death. The Wayne County Sheriff's Office and the SBI continue to actively follow leads associated with the homicide. A reward of $35,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest, and a Governor's Reward of $5,000 is available for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in the case.
