Shyane Marcia Locklear, a 19-year-old Native American woman from Laurel Hill, North Carolina, tragically lost her life on December 7, 2018. Shyane was nine months pregnant at the time of her death, and her unborn son, Tyreon McRae Turner, also perished in the incident. Shyane was known for her love of music, her ability to make people laugh, and her heart for helping others. She was eagerly anticipating the birth of her son, who was expected to be born on the same day she died.
On the night of December 7, 2018, Shyane was shot and killed at a residence on Lennon Drive in the Laurel Hill community of Scotland County. The Scotland County Sheriff's Office responded to a shots fired call at around 10:20 PM. Upon arrival, they found Shyane, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Her unborn baby boy was also pronounced dead.
The investigation led to the arrest of Tygira McRae Turner, a 21-year-old man from Laurel Hill. Turner was charged with first-degree premeditated murder in connection with Shyane's death. According to the Scotland County Sheriff's Office, Turner also fired shots at Shyane's parents and their two-year-old grandson while they were seated in their vehicle outside the home, waiting for Shyane to return. Fortunately, they were not injured in the incident.
Turner was taken into custody without bond and faced additional charges for the murder of the unborn child, as well as charges related to the attempted shooting of Shyane's family members. The Scotland County Sheriff's Office extended their deepest sympathies to the families involved, acknowledging the tragic nature of the event.
Shyane's death and the subsequent investigation highlighted the devastating impact of domestic violence and the loss of two innocent lives. The community mourned the loss of Shyane and her unborn son, and her family and friends remembered her as a loving and caring individual who brought joy to those around her.
