Willie Frank Moore, a 60-year-old man from Durham, NC, was tragically murdered in his home on January 8, 2019. His death was the result of a violent attack by his son, Chivalry Alexander Moore, who was 33 years old at the time. The incident occurred at Willie Moore's residence on Tomahawk Trail in Durham County.
Chivalry Moore was charged with first-degree murder after he sent photos of his father's body to a co-worker at a UPS facility, along with texts confessing to the killing.
The photos showed Willie Moore's body with multiple stab wounds, and the texts indicated that Chivalry Moore had killed his father. Law enforcement responded to the home after receiving these disturbing messages and found Willie Moore's body with extensive wounds to the back of his head and body.
During the investigation, deputies discovered a large knife with blood stains under Willie Moore's body, as well as a broken gold club head and shaft, and a broken table leg, all with blood stains. Chivalry Moore was taken into custody after a standoff with law enforcement, during which he was shot by a deputy and subsequently hospitalized. He was later charged with his father's murder.
In November 2024, Chivalry Moore was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The prosecution argued that the murder was premeditated, as evidenced by text messages Chivalry Moore sent to relatives suggesting they say goodbye to Willie Moore before the killing. Chivalry Moore claimed he acted in self-defense, but the jury rejected this defense.
The case drew significant attention due to the nature of the crime and the involvement of law enforcement in the standoff. Deputy David Bermel, who shot Chivalry Moore during the arrest, was placed on paid leave pending an internal investigation, and the State Bureau of Investigation reviewed the case as standard procedure for officer-involved shootings.
