Chad Lee Kennedy, a 38-year-old white male from Stony Point, North Carolina, was found dead on February 9, 2019, at his residence on Mount Wesley Church Road. Kennedy's death was the result of a shooting incident that also claimed the life of Mark Jefferson Furey, a 57-year-old white male from Taylorsville. The bodies of both men were discovered in different areas inside Kennedy's residence around noon on the day of the incident.
Following a month-long investigation, authorities arrested
three suspects in connection with the murders. Robert Bryan Hoover, a 36-year-old white male from Stony Point, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder. Adam Thomas Morgan, a 20-year-old white male from Stony Point, was also charged with two counts of first-degree murder. Brandy Lynn Miller, a 28-year-old white female from Stony Point, faced two counts of accessory after the fact.
The arrests were made on March 15, 2019, after a coordinated effort by multiple law enforcement agencies. Hoover and Miller were located in Smyth County, Virginia, and taken into custody without incident. Morgan was found at a residence in Taylorsville and was also apprehended without incident. The suspects were held without bond, with Hoover and Miller awaiting extradition hearings and Morgan being held at the Alexander County Detention Center.
In November 2022, Adam Thomas Morgan pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder and was sentenced to 221 to 278 months in prison, with credit for time served. Morgan had been incarcerated since his arrest in March 2019. The other two suspects, Hoover and Miller, were still awaiting trial at the time of Morgan's sentencing. Hoover remained charged with two counts of first-degree murder, while Miller faced two counts of accessory after the fact of first-degree murder.
