Crystal Johnson Barker, a 43-year-old woman from Vale, NC, tragically lost her life on April 23, 2019. Crystal, who was of Caucasian ethnicity, was shot and killed by her husband, Joseph Wayne Barker, during a domestic dispute. On that fateful day, Joseph barricaded Crystal inside a bedroom of their residence, locking the door and blocking it with his body so their teenage sons could not get inside. He made threats against her, which she repeated so the boys could hear. After each threat, Joseph passed a weapon outside to his children, including two knives and three firearms. Eventually, he fired a single gunshot from a .22-caliber revolver that struck Crystal in the chest, resulting in her death.
The Catawba County Sheriff's Office STAR Team arrived at the scene and found Crystal Barker deceased. However, Joseph Barker had already fled. A two-day manhunt ensued, involving the Catawba County Sheriff's Office, North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, and U.S. Marshals. Joseph's wrecked vehicle was found abandoned in Transylvania County, and he was eventually apprehended while hiding in a wooded area.
Joseph Wayne Barker, who had no prior felony record, was later convicted of second-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping. On August 30, 2021, he was sentenced to 17 to 22 years in prison by the Catawba County Superior Court. The victim's family supported the plea arrangement to avoid further trauma for Crystal's sons, who would have had to testify in a trial setting.
Crystal Barker's family members, including her mother, Deborah Townley, and her brother, Paul Johnson, expressed their grief and the profound impact her death had on their lives. Deborah described Crystal as a sweet and gentle spirit who deeply loved her children, while Paul emphasized that their family would never be the same after such a senseless loss.
