Tiyler Graves, a 16-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on January 30, 2020, in Burlington, North Carolina. Tiyler was shot and killed on East Holt Street around 9:20 p.m. while walking home from a Family Dollar store with friends. The incident also involved a 21-year-old male, Torrance Daye Jr., who was injured but survived. Tiyler was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into Tiyler's death led to the arrest of Makai Jacobi Steele, an 18-year-old male,
who was initially charged with Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill. However, the charges were later upgraded to first-degree murder. Steele is currently being held without bond. Two other individuals, Geki Rahmel Gwynn, 18, and Nasia Kawan Kimber McAdoo, 19, were also charged in connection with the incident. Gwynn faces charges of first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, while McAdoo is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.
The community of Burlington was deeply affected by Tiyler's death. Friends and family described him as a fun, loving, and kind young man with a passion for music. A vigil was held in his memory, where loved ones gathered to honor his life and legacy. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and additional arrests are possible as the Burlington Police Department continues to seek information related to the case.
