In the summer of 2015, a senseless act of violence silenced a beloved member of a Detroit community. Clarence Cody, a 37-year-old man, was shot and killed in his own driveway on Pinehurst Street. Known affectionately as 'Clue' and the 'Mayor of Pinehurst,' Cody was a familiar and friendly face in his neighborhood. A few years prior to his death, an accident had left him disabled and reliant on a wheelchair, a fact that made his violent end all the more shocking to those who knew him.
On that Tuesday in June, Cody was enjoying the day in his lawn chair, having moved into the shade to escape the sun. It was a routine he followed almost every day. His peace was shattered when a man approached from behind his home and fired a single, fatal shot to the back of his head. Witnesses reported hearing as many as four gunshots in total. The gunman was described as a man with a dark complexion and dreadlocks.
After the shooting, the suspect was seen fleeing through a neighbor's yard. He then got into the passenger side of an SUV which sped away from the scene. The brazen nature of the attack in broad daylight left the community in fear and searching for answers. Hamilton, a neighbor who witnessed the escape, rushed to Cody's side, but it was too late. Cody was knocked from his chair by the force of the shot, and his life was tragically cut short.
In the wake of his death, family and friends mourned the loss of a man they described as gentle and harmless. His cousin, Sonta Cody, emphasized his vulnerability, stating that he 'couldn't do nothing to nobody.' The loss was particularly devastating for his family, which included an 18-year-old daughter and a baby boy who was due to be born in less than a month. Despite the witness accounts and the description of the suspect, no arrests in the case have been publicly reported, leaving a painful void and an unanswered question of why anyone would target a disabled man who could not even run away.
