On August 10, 2020, at approximately 8:14 a.m., Matthews officers responded to the 2700 block of Lakeview Circle regarding a report of an abandoned vehicle. Upon their arrival, the vehicle in question was located, and after further investigation of the surrounding area, officers discovered a deceased male on the shoulder of the road near this vehicle. The man was identified as Cory DeShawn Carpenter, a 27-year-old African American male from Charlotte.
During the crime scene investigation, Matthews Detectives determined that it appeared Mr. Carpenter had died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds, therefore classifying this case as a homicide. Matthews Detectives assigned to the Criminal Investigations Division, along with the Matthews Street Crimes Unit, worked tirelessly from the onset to identify and locate who was responsible for Mr. Carpenter’s death.
Through corroborating evidence and witness statements collected during this investigation, Detectives were able to identify the individuals believed to be responsible for this crime. They are Zatario Jarod Stewart and Tobias Lamario McNeil, both of Charlotte. Once they were identified, an arrest warrant for each of them with the charge of murder was applied for and received from the Mecklenburg County Magistrate’s Office.
Mr. Stewart was taken into custody by CMPD on August 17, 2020, and Mr. McNeil was taken into custody by Durham Police Department on August 17, 2020. Both are currently in custody at the Mecklenburg County Jail. The Matthews Police Department expressed their sincere thanks and appreciation to CMPD, Durham Police Department, and the U.S. Secret Service for all the assistance provided to locate and safely apprehend these individuals.
