Deante Brown, a 28-year-old Black man, was tragically killed on September 6, 2020, in Charlotte, North Carolina. The incident occurred during a confrontation with Da'Reem Dante Gaskin, who was later identified as the perpetrator. The altercation between Brown and Gaskin escalated into a physical fight, during which Gaskin shot Brown multiple times.
Brown was subsequently transported to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Following the incident, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department launched an investigation into Brown's death. Gaskin, who was 27 years old at the time, was arrested on September 15, 2020, with the assistance of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He was charged with murder, discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle in operation, and possession of a firearm by a felon.
The case proceeded to trial, where Gaskin was found guilty of second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was sentenced to 23 years in prison on November 26, 2024. The jury's verdict also included a requirement for Gaskin to pay restitution to Brown's family.
