Lee'Vantay D'Martinez Rankin, a 27-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on March 15, 2021, in Charlotte, North Carolina. The incident occurred on Kings Ridge Drive, where a triple shooting took place. Rankin, along with 22-year-old Isiah Jeremiah Doctor-Muhammad, was shot while they were in a car. The suspects mistakenly believed that their vehicle was involved in a previous altercation.
Rankin was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries, while Doctor-Muhammad died at the scene. A third man was also shot but survived.
The investigation led to the arrest of Marteicus Taylor, who was charged with two counts of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, shooting into an occupied vehicle, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Taylor, who was already an inmate at Tabor Correctional Jail, was later sentenced to 207-261 months in prison after pleading guilty to two counts of second-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.
The case faced complications due to issues with crime lab evidence, which led to a plea deal instead of a trial. The evidence technician involved in the case was found to have tampered with evidence, affecting multiple cases. This development caused significant distress to the families of the victims, who felt that the justice system had failed them.
