Jason B. West, a 36-year-old male, was a great father to his two teenage children whose family was left devastated by his sudden death. His life was cut short by a shooting on the night of March 15, 2021, in Lumberton, North Carolina. His niece said the family had no idea why anyone would want to harm him.
At approximately 9:21 p.m., deputies from the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call about a shooting at a home at 2637 N.C. 72 W.
When they arrived, they found Jason West deceased in the front yard. Two other people, 18-year-old Jamison D. Locklear and an unidentified 17-year-old male, were also shot but were transported to a medical center and expected to recover from their injuries. A third person suffering from a gunshot wound from the incident also arrived at UNC Southeastern Medical Center.
The Robeson County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Division launched an investigation that quickly led to arrests. On March 18, 2021, just three days after the shooting, investigators arrested a 17-year-old male. In late April 2021, a second 17-year-old was also taken into custody. Both teenagers were charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and other related offenses.
Authorities also identified an 18-year-old from Fairmont, Brendan Deon Jones, as a third suspect wanted in connection with the killing. Jones was later arrested and charged with murder for his alleged role in Jason West’s death. He was subsequently released on bond while awaiting trial.
In April 2025, Jones was arrested again and charged with first-degree murder in a separate, unrelated shooting death that occurred while he was out on bond. As of his arrest that month, the murder charges against him in the case of Jason West remained pending.
