On October 20, 2021, 34-year-old Gilbert Noel Guzman, a male, was found shot to death in the parking lot of an apartment complex in Cary, North Carolina. The incident occurred around 7 p.m. at the 1200 block of Village Greenway, near SE Maynard Road and East Cary Middle School. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Guzman dead and another individual seriously injured.
The injured person was taken to the hospital for treatment.
The Cary Police Department identified 24-year-old Luis Mario Velasquez-Guevara as the suspect in the shooting. Velasquez-Guevara was initially charged with murder, attempted murder, and felonious assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injury. The police believed that everyone involved in the incident knew each other. In the days following the shooting, Deputy Chief of Police Shawn Anderson expressed condolences to Guzman's family and hoped that Velasquez-Guevara's arrest would bring justice to them.
In February 2024, a grand jury indicted Velasquez-Guevara on charges of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injury. The investigation into the incident revealed that the shooting might have been preventable if adequate security measures had been in place at the apartment complex. The family of Gilbert Noel Guzman and the injured victim may seek justice and pursue legal claims for their loss and injuries.
