James Malique Rudy Gross, a 25-year-old African American male, was tragically shot to death on October 31, 2021, outside his home on Foxhunt Lane in Fayetteville, North Carolina. The incident occurred around 3 p.m. when Gross had just backed his car into the driveway. According to the autopsy report, he was shot once in the chest and managed to make his way into his home before collapsing by the front door.
The report also suggests that more than one weapon was fired during the exchange of gunfire.
The Fayetteville Police Department has stated that the shooting is not believed to be random. Despite the efforts of investigators, no arrests have been made, and the case remains an active investigation. Officer Jeremy Strickland mentioned that the killer fled the scene before police arrived. The shooting resulted in at least 20 shell casings being found in Gross' driveway, and bullets also struck at least five vehicles. Shell casings were discovered in a neighbor's yard two houses down.
Nine calls were made to 911 in the wake of the shooting, including two calls from Gross' parents as they attempted to help their mortally wounded son. Another call from a neighbor identified a burgundy station wagon as potentially being involved in the shooting. The incident was one of 18 open homicide investigations in Fayetteville in 2021 in which no arrest has been made.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect arrived at the residence in a vehicle and began shooting at Gross before fleeing the scene. The Fayetteville Police Department has declined to provide further details, and the case remains unsolved. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Detective J. Nevitt or Crimestoppers to assist in the investigation.
