Richard Boyd, a 48-year-old Black / African American male, was a victim of a fatal shooting incident that occurred in Detroit, Michigan. On the morning of April 5, 2021, Detroit police officers were dispatched to a residence in the 5170 block of Fairview Street on the city's east side following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, first responders discovered two victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Tayone Boyd, 28, was found lifeless at the scene, while Richard Boyd and a third victim, 43-year-old Wallace Cranford, were transported to a local hospital for urgent medical treatment. Richard Boyd subsequently succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.
The investigation revealed that the violence stemmed from a domestic dispute involving Carlos Jeffrey Anderson, who was 19 years old at the time. According to court records, Anderson had been in a relationship with Riquia Boyd, who was Richard's daughter and Tayone's sister. The altercation reportedly began as an argument over a television set while Riquia was in the process of moving her belongings out of the home she shared with Anderson. The dispute escalated, leading to Anderson firing multiple shots at the family members and the third individual who had arrived to assist them.
Law enforcement officials identified Anderson as the primary suspect shortly after the incident. Following an investigation by the Detroit Police Department, Anderson was apprehended and arrested on April 26, 2021. The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office charged him with two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of assault with intent to murder, and four counts of felony firearm possession. Anderson was arraigned in the 36th District Court and remanded to jail without bond pending trial.
In the subsequent legal proceedings, a jury convicted Anderson of two counts of second-degree murder, one count of assault with intent to commit murder, and three counts of carrying a firearm during the commission of a felony. He appealed his convictions, but the Michigan Court of Appeals affirmed the lower court's decision in October 2024, upholding the sentences for the deaths of Richard and Tayone Boyd.
