Dwayne Gregory Jr., a 24-year-old African American male, was tragically shot and killed on the night of May 18, 2022, in Edenton, North Carolina. The incident occurred around 11:37 p.m. in the 100 block of Cox Avenue. When police arrived at the scene, they found Gregory with fatal injuries. The Edenton Police Department quickly determined that the shooting was not a random act of violence, indicating that Gregory was specifically targeted.
The investigation into Gregory's death initially faced challenges, and the case went cold. However, with the assistance of the FBI's Manteo office, the Edenton Police Department was able to develop probable cause for an arrest warrant. Nearly two years after the incident, on May 19, 2024, 19-year-old Kavondre Levecchio Dillard was arrested in Portsmouth, Virginia, in connection with Gregory's murder. Dillard was charged with first-degree murder and was held on a $1 million bond at the Chowan County Detention Center.
