Paula Kay Self, a 55-year-old woman from Kernersville, North Carolina, tragically passed away on November 7, 2022. Paula was born on July 2, 1967, and was a beloved daughter, sister, and aunt. She was known for her quiet and spiritual nature, deep faith, and passion for caring for animals, especially stray cats. Paula was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Kernersville and was cherished by her family and friends.
The circumstances surrounding Paula's death were deeply distressing. On the morning of November 7, 2022, law enforcement officers responded to a shooting at Paula's residence on Weatherton Drive in Kernersville. Upon arrival, they found Paula deceased in her home. An additional male victim was located at a neighbor's house and was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound.
Investigations revealed that Paula was in a romantic relationship with Derrick Jose Ward, a 35-year-old habitual felon. On the day of the incident, video evidence showed Ward leaving Paula's home after an argument and returning later that morning. It was during this time that Ward allegedly killed Paula and shot the other male victim.
Ward was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, felony firearm by felon, and felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injury. He was also charged with multiple outstanding legal processes unrelated to the incident. Ward pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in connection with Paula's death and was sentenced to a minimum of 120 months and a maximum of 156 months in the North Carolina Division of Adult Corrections.
Paula's death was a devastating loss for her family and the community. She is survived by her parents, Norman and Lynda Self, her brothers Lee and David, and numerous other family members who were present in court during the trial.
