At the gathering in the 5300 block of Cooper Street, between Barker and Moffat Avenue, shots rang out, striking 21-year-old Lamonte Jacobs. He succumbed to his injuries the following day, on July 5, 2016.
The festive atmosphere of the holiday was shattered by the violence that claimed the young man's life.
In the aftermath, the Detroit Police Department began an investigation, but faced significant challenges. Despite the large number of people present at the block party, a 'no snitch' culture was cited as a major roadblock, hindering the identification of the person or persons responsible for the shooting. Investigators believe there were undoubtedly witnesses to the fatal event, but a lack of cooperation from the community has left the case unsolved.
In the years following Lamonte's death, his family has continued to seek justice. His father, Willie Clark III, has been a vocal advocate for his son, expressing the deep pain of his loss and the frustration of an unresolved case. In an effort to encourage someone to come forward, Clark raised money to offer a cash reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction. This reward was in addition to a separate reward offered by Crime Stoppers.
As of early 2020, no arrests had been made in the murder of Lamonte Jacobs, and the case remains open. The family's plea for answers and the ongoing efforts of law enforcement have yet to bring closure to the tragic and untimely death of the young man at a holiday celebration. The search for the unknown individual who fired the fatal shots continues.
