Captain Charles Ariant, a corrections officer with the Louisiana Department of Corrections, was shot and killed by an inmate at the Louisiana State Penitentiary on January 1, 1904. The incident occurred in the bullpen area just as the inmates were about to be counted and sent to their cells. Captain Ariant was 45 years old at the time of his death.
